Delivering fire protection equipment to be used on the open sea can present challenges. On a research vessel that will spend the Nordic summers in the Arctic and winter months in Antarctica, it is important that the equipment installed can withstand being exposed to the forces of nature at sea, as well as the extreme cold.
It’s not just weather and the environment that can present challenges. The corridors on the ship are narrow, and it is important that escape routes are not blocked by doors or fire hose reels in the event of an emergency. On RRS Sir David Attenborough there was also great variation in the layout of right or left-hinged cabinets in public areas due to space limitations.
The research ship replaces previous vessels that have been in service in the Polar regions for 20 to 25 years. Equipment from NOHA is designed to withstand the challenging conditions. With the possibility of replacement products and easy access to spare parts, NOHA’s equipment will serve RRS Sir David Attenborough on her expeditions for decades to come.
